During the KFFC’s first art workshop, the festival’s 9th edition tote bags and posters, under the theme of “Environment: Resilience and Sustainability,” were created. The workshop aimed to create and explore a creative team synergy amongst our emerging artists. As an artist-driven organization, we are steering the next, young generation of leaders to engage with Asian diaspora communities through different creative activities and perspectives. 

The workshop was mentored by Iris Sautier, a renowned artist originally from Switzerland who is known around the world for her art prints. The design for the tote bags and posters are designed by the festival’s graphic designer, Fanny Lord-Bourcier (Chinese diaspora, animator). Five other emerging artists from the KFFC, Laura Baek, Mathilde Elie, Zoe Sarkar, Gayeon Song and Nicholas Linh (former staff member) joined Fanny in the creation of this year’s tote bags and posters.

The intense workshop was held from 9 to 5pm on Thursday, April 28, in the heart of the Plateau in Montreal. The artists worked tirelessly to create the limited edition tote bags and posters. They experienced new artistic challenges through this medium since screenprinting was relatively new to them. It requires core strength and your undivided attention. Zoë Sarkar (Festival Coordinator of the KFFC) says, “dried paint in the screens means the paint doesn’t print properly onto the material you are printing on, so it is always a good idea to do a test run before printing directly onto your chosen materials. We certainly all had a greater appreciation for printing art by the end of the day, thanks to our mentor Iris!”

The entire KFFC team is proud of our artists who took  part in our first workshop! It was a huge success! The tote bags are available for pre-order for $25 (with a film screening ticket at McCord Museum).
